Wind meter - Types of wind meter

Wind meter is defined as the device or the instrument that is used to determine and record the speed of the wind and also helpful in recording the direction of the wind is called as wind meter. It is also called as anemometer because of the determination of the wind speed. Wind meter is designed in such a way that it can be measure or record the wind speed and the direction up to 0 to more then 17 meters. The main purpose of developing the wind meter is that we can easily construct the device and can use this device in the wide environmental range area and it is more reliable as compared to the other devices. Wind meters are also able to measure the pressure of the wind.

Historical Background:
Wind meter is not a new technology or the instrument to measure and record the speed and the pressure of the wind but it is a device that was developed in the 14th century in the Italy. But with the passage of time the wind meter become more advanced as compared to other measuring devices of the wind speed and the pressure. In the 18th century a new wind meter called as the hemispherical cup wind meter was invented and then with the help of more advanced technologies a latest wind meter that is used commonly was developed in 1994 called as the sonic wind meter.

Basic Functions of Wind Meter:
As we all know that wind meter is used for the calculation of ye wind speed and the pressure of the wind. But the wind meter has some basic or the specific functions that are really helpful for the present era. Some functions are as follows

  1. wind meters are used to measure the strong or the high speed and the pressure of the wind
  2. with the help of the wind meter weather forecast departments are able to tell about the strength and the power of the storm in the particular area with the help- of the information collected by the wind meter
  3. wind meters also applicable in checking the weather conditions for the air crafts and planes

Types of Wind Meter:
There are different types of wind meters that are used world widely for the calculation of the wind speed but the most common wind meter that is used almost in every location of the world is the velocity wind meters and the pressure wind meters.

Velocity Wind Meters:
The wind meters that are designed for the calculation of the wind speed is known as the velocity wind meter. There are many forms of the velocity wind meter but the commonly used form is the cup wind meter. Cup wind meter is designed in such a way that three or four cups are arranged on the rod. When the wind flows the cups are moved in the rotational form. By counting the number of turns we can easily determine the velocity of the speed of the wind of that particular location. Other advanced forms of the wind meters are also used for the precise measurements of velocity such as the Laser Doppler etc.

Pressure Wind Meters:
The type of the wind sensors that are able to measure the pressure or the pressure difference of the wind are called as the pressure wind meters. In the past a simple plate pressure wind meter was used for the detection of the pressure exerted by the wind but after some changes and researches tube pressure wind meter come in contact with the latest technology. In this case the pressure of the wind is detected with the help of liquid filled in the tube of the wind meter.
